When it comes to improving your triathlon performance, especially on the bike, one of the
most effective training tools is time trialling. Time trials require speed, efficiency, and the ability to push your limits over a set distance. But why should we as triathletes incorporate time trials into their training?
Improving and testing Aerodynamics & Positioning
Time trial racing forces you to focus on your aerodynamic position, which is crucial for
triathlon. By refining your aero, optimising your bike fit, and training in this position, you’ll
improve the ability to sustain speed with less effort. This translates directly to better triathlon
bike splits and improved overall efficiency.
Building Power
A well-paced time trial is one of the best ways to test and improve your Power. There’s no
better test, or way to get everything out of yourself than pinning a number on so it can be a
great session
Improving Pacing Strategy
Triathlons require disciplined pacing, and time trialling teaches you exactly that. A strong TT
effort forces you to manage your energy output wisely, preventing you from going out too
hard too soon, and when to push on. This directly translates to triathlon racing, where you
need to balance effort on the bike while preserving enough energy for the run.
Mental Toughness & Focus
Time trialling is as much a mental challenge as it is physical. With no drafting, it’s just you
against yourself, demanding intense concentration and mental resilience. This experience strengthens your ability to stay focused during solo training rides and long-distance triathlons, where mental discipline is just as important as fitness.

Testing
Regular time trial efforts provide clear data on your progress. Whether it’s through tracking
power, heart rate, or finishing times, these races give quantifiable feedback on
improvements, helping you fine-tune your training plan.
Hopefully this will help you make the most of those midweek time trials and race better come your next triathlon.
